  • Churchill becomes the first men’s college to decide to admit women (8 March)
  • Student representatives admitted as observers to College Council: first reps are Julian Filowchowski (U66) and Edward Libbey (U&G66)
  • Students (in particular Michael Trier, U67) organise International Student Conference on ‘Relations between Industry and the Universities’, Prince Philip present
  • John Barnes, Fellow, becomes the university’s first professor of sociology
  • Final May Ball, with Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath
  • Service at the Chapel broadcast on BBC World Service
